Wednesday was National Biscuit Day! I thought it was a great time to go through some of the gluten-free biscuits I’ve found and loved so far on my Coeliac journey!
Biscuits are a great snack to have on hand when you’re out and about. When you have Coeliac Disease, snacks are essential. Here’s a few that I’ve found that pass the ‘can you tell it’s gluten-free’ test!
Why not pin it for later?

If you haven’t already, make sure to check out my post ‘Coeliac Disease: Living The Gluten Free Life‘ to get the low down on Coeliac Disease and why gluten free treats are so important!
Asda’s Free From Cookies and Cream
When discovering I had Coeliac Disease, I was saddened to find that Oreo’s are unfortunately not gluten free. So the hunt was on for a worthy substitution!
I’m aware that Oreos do actually have a gluten free version of their own. Not sure if it is simply a UK thing but I never manage to find them on the supermarket shelves!
So I was pleased that while perusing the aisles of Asda, I came across their Free From Cookies and Cream biscuits.

The Pros:
- They’re a little bigger than a traditional Oreo which is always a good thing!
- They make a pretty good replacement for regular Oreos in looks.
- It’s not particularly obvious that they’re gluten free.
The Cons:
- A little lacking in taste, somewhat sweet but overall not much else.
- Definitely not enough filling! I’m someone that loves a double stuffed Oreo but even for regular biscuit filling, these leave much to be desired.
Overall Score – 4/10
Schars Custard Creams
Custard creams have always been a favourite biscuit of mine. They’re great for a little treat, and they dip very well in a cup of tea! Schars is a brand well known among the Coeliac community. Their gluten free products are great and I’m especially a fan of their white bread rolls.
So of course, I had to give their gluten free version of custard creams a try! Unfortunately, I was overall disappointed. They were nice enough but had a couple of issues.

The Pros:
- They come in individual packets of two. Brilliant for making sure your biscuits don’t go stale after the packet is open!
- The taste is nice, sweet and very much like that of a regular custard cream.
The Cons:
- Very, very crumbly! A lot of it ended up all over my keyboard and the floor.
- Has a strange aftertaste, leaves a kind of coating in the mouth that’s not particularly pleasant.
- Tends to cement in your teeth a little bit.
- It seemed more obvious to me that these were specifically gluten free, they had that kind of ‘not quite right’ taste.
Overall Score – 5/10
Asda’s Free From Shortbread
I love shortbread. I always remember going on a family holiday to the Lake District. My grandma likes to bake and she had made some shortbread biscuits. I had one and I was hooked. I could have sat and eaten them all day. They’ve been a favourite ever since so I picked these up in Asda straight away.

The Pros:
- It looks great, creamy and soft and buttery. Just like any other shortbread biscuit!
- Nice and crumbly – which in the case of shortbread is actually a good thing.
The Cons:
- Unfortunately, they don’t have much flavour. They’re not overly sweet and are actually quite bland.
- While the crumbliness is good, the biscuit actually becomes quite hard to swallow. It gets very dense and claggy – a good cup of tea is highly recommended!
- I didn’t think they seemed too obvious as a gluten free dupe but my sister also tried them and said she could definitely tell they weren’t regular shortbread.
Overall Score – 6/10
Free From Chocolate Orange Cookies (Morrisons)
When I bought these it was going out on a limb a little. I don’t normally care for orange flavoured things unless it’s an actual chocolate orange (before I was diagnosed with Coeliac). That being said, I’m very glad I bought them. They were delicious and super moreish. I think I may have eaten the whole pack in a day.

The Pros:
- These cookies are softer than they look. From their appearance they look a little well done and like they’re going to be really crunchy.
- They taste amazing! The orange is quite subtle so it’s not overpowering which I liked. There was also a good amount of chocolate chunks spread throughout.
- You couldn’t tell these were gluten free. Tasted just as good as any other cookie I’ve had in my life.
The Cons:
- Okay, this is going to seem like a contradiction given my last point above but they were a little lacking in flavour. The taste itself was nice but there didn’t seem to be too much of it. It could have done with a tad more for me.
- Again, possibly a little contradicting but they have a kind of weird texture. They are soft but in a kind of stale way? I don’t know for me it seemed like they were soft but weren’t supposed to be?
- We have another biscuit that is unfortunately just too crumbly! One thing I hate when eating biscuits is when more of it falls in your lap when you pick it up then you actually end up eating.
Overall Score – 8/10
Co-op’s Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Cookies
The nearest shop to where I work is a little Co-op. So when I was diagnosed with Coeliac Disease and realised that I had nothing to snack on at work, that was where I went. As it was only a little one, they had limited options for gluten free biscuits but their chocolate chip cookies were one of them. I must go through at the very least one packet of these a week.
They’re so good and I would definitely recommend them if you’re a biscuit lover looking for a gluten free treat!

The Pros:
- The cookies are nice and thick, they’ve got a bit of substance so they actually are quite filling.
- They’re nice and sweet but not to the point where it becomes sickly.
- Has a good amount of chocolate chunks in there, most of which are pretty big.
- I personally cannot tell the difference between these and regular chocolate chip cookies.
The Cons:
If I had to give it one it’s that after a few of them they can get a little stodgy. Again, this is one I’d recommend with a hot drink to dip them in.
Overall Score – 9/10
So there you have it. Those are just a few of the biscuit options available to you when you have Coeliac Disease. Of course there are a lot more out there and some that I’m sure are a lot more interesting and super tasty.
Why didn’t I get more interesting biscuits? Come on, if you don’t know by now that I’m not the most adventurous when it comes to food then you haven’t been reading this blog long enough!
If you do have any biscuit recommendations then make sure to leave a comment below! I might have to add them to my ‘try’ list. If you’ve tried any of the biscuits I’ve mentioned, let me know what you thought of them.
